Are Olly Restful Sleep Gummies Safe

So you’re having difficulty sleeping or just wanted to try a new product to make the most out of your already minimal amount of sleep. But a question that runs through your mind is are these seemingly harmless gummies actually safe. Well, I myself wondered the same question a few months ago when I first started using them, and I was surprised by the lack of information I could find. So I wrote this especially for someone that’s in my shoes.

Yes, they are safe. The ingredients that these gummies contain are non-toxic and can be ingested safely in the given quantities. So ease your mind! Continue reading for more infomation about what exactly you are putting into your body!

Olly Restful Sleep Gummies Ingredients

So now that we have established that they are safe, you’re probably wondering what exactly they are made of. According to the ingredients label, they are made from:

  • Melatonin
  • L-Theanine
  • Botanicals like Chamomile and Lemon balm
  • Glucose Syrup
  • Beet Sugar
  • Water
  • Gelatin
  • Citric Acid
  • Natural Flavors
  • Pectin (from fruit)
  • Color (from purple carrot, black carrot, blueberry)
  • Vegetable Oil and Carnauba Wax (for anti-sticking)

The ingredients are safe and are often found in many other foods we eat. WebMD suggests a dosage of 0.3 to 5 mg of melatonin for up to 9 months, and the SleepDoctor (Michael J. Breus, Ph.D.) recommends 100 to 400 mg per day for sleep purposes. The other components are not considered active ingredients, so their dosages are irrelevant. The gummies contain 3 mg of melatonin and 200 mg of L-Theanine in the recommended dosage of two gummies before bed for an adult. So these active ingredients fall into the normal range an adult should take before bed.

Olly Restful Sleep Gummies vs Melatonin

The main difference between Olly Restful Sleep Gummies and Melatonin is the additional active ingredient L-Theanine. This amino acid is found in tea leaves and has been linked to increased relaxation and better overall sleep. This excerpt from psychology today explains the beneficial effects of L-Theanine very well.

How L-theanine works
L-theanine promotes relaxation and facilitates sleep by contributing to a number of changes in the brain:

Boosts levels of GABA and other calming brain chemicals. L-theanine elevates levels of GABA, as well as serotonin and dopamine. These chemicals are known as neurotransmitters, and they work in the brain to regulate emotions, mood, concentration, alertness, and sleep, as well as appetite, energy, and other cognitive skills. Increasing levels of these calming brain chemicals promote relaxation and can help with sleep.

Lowers levels of “excitatory” brain chemicals. At the same time, it is increasing chemicals that promote feelings of calm, L-theanine also reduces levels of chemicals in the brain that are linked to stress and anxiety. This may also be a way that L-theanine can protect brain cells against stress and age-related damage.

Melatonin alone could help you fall asleep as it has been well vetted by the medical community and proven to help you adjust your sleep-wake cycles. Melatonin is a naturally occurring hormone found in your body, and its also found in many of the foods we eat like:

  • Bananas
  • Oats
  • Corn
  • Rice
  • Tomatoes
  • Radishes
  • And even Red wine

Good news for those before bed wine drinkers!

Melatonin is produced in your body in response to darkness, which is why blind people are given Melatonin to help regulate their sleep schedule despite not being able to perceive light. People that naturally produce less melatonin will have difficulty falling asleep, which is why it can be helpful to those people who find it hard to sleep despite it being dark.

Anecdotally, I’ve been taking for melatonin for years, and I’ve noticed a huge difference between regular melatonin and these gummies. I’ve been taking them religiously ever since!

Are Olly Restful Sleep Gummies Vegan

Unfortunately no. The gummies contain Gelatin, which is made from animal byproducts, making it non-friendly for vegans and vegetarians.

Do Olly Restful Sleep Gummies Actually Work

Personally, I’ve had great success with them, but your experience may vary. Like many other supplements, the claims made have not been evaluated by the FDA. But that doesn’t necessarily mean they don’t work. There have been many studies which evaluate the effects on sleep; stating that both active ingredients (Melatonin and L-Theanine) have had with some success with encouraging sleep.

Olly Restful Sleep Gummies Dosage

You should take gummies daily about 30 minutes before you are ready for bed. The bottle contains 50 gummies, meaning each bottle almost lasts about a month assuming you take them every day.

Can You Overdose on Olly Restful Sleep Gummies

It would be incredibly difficult to overdose on these sleep gummies because the components are relatively harmless. Melatonin, for example, could have some minor adverse side-effects, such as an upset stomach, insomnia, headaches and even a potential for bad nightmares. But after testing it on lab rats the LD50 could not be established.

The LD50 is the lethal dose that is administered to all the rats in population would kill 50%. For comparison, Arsenic (a common poison) has an LD50 of 15 mg/kg, meaning that if a population of adult rats weighing 500 grams each (defiantly on the higher end) were given 7.5 mg of arsenic, then half of the population would die. Meanwhile for melatonin 800mg/kg would still not be a lethal dose for humans or rats. If an average human weights 137 lbs (62 kg), they would have to ingest 62kg * 800mg/kg = 49.6 grams of Melatonin, equal to about 8266 gummies worth of Melatonin, and remember that wouldn’t even be enough to overdose.

L-Theanine has an LD50 of over 5000mg/kg in rats. Meaning that if we do the same calculations, 62kg*5000mg/kg = 310 grams of L-Theanine or equal to about 775 gummies, almost 16 entire bottles.

So rest assured that you will not overdose. But it is a general rule of thumb to consult your doctor before taking any type of medicine, even supplements.

I find it usually beneficial to take melatonin (and products containing it) two weeks on and two weeks off. As you don’t want your body to grow accustomed to always taking it in pill form, instead of producing it on its own.
